Please contact the White House and your elected representatives in the U.S. House and Senate to demand that Trump utilize the Defense Production Act to ensure that we have adequate medical supplies and equipment to deal with the coming wave of COVID-19 patients.
Conventional wisdom holds that we are about 10 days behind Italy when it comes to experiencing COVID-19. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States is growing exponentially.
It is incumbent on us all to flatten the curve and buy time for our front-line medical personnel and hospitals. However, they need resources. There is a massive shortage of necessary medical supplies — masks, protective suits, sanitizer, ventilators, sanitizers, even hospital beds. Our hospitals were not set up for combat-like conditions and yet, this is what they are facing.
The Defense Production Act, as explained in this article, is a 1950 law intended to help address wartime shortages during the Korean War (and based on similar laws enacted during WWII), which allows the President to direct private manufacturing concerns to produce certain types of necessary goods when this is deemed essential for our national security. As of this writing, he has not indicated any willingness to use it, tweeting that he would only “invoke it in a worst case scenario in the future.” We ARE in the worst case scenario.
We need to utilize the Defense Production Act and start directing the production of basic medical goods to deal with this crisis. Send a letter, fax, or call The White House, your representative and senator ask them to act now. If manufacturing can begin now, our medical personnel will have the supplies and tools they need and lives can be saved.
